Tuesday, January 5, 2010
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Travelers on this day trip to San Francisco will see exhibitions at two museums:
Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at the de Young Museum
For the first time in 30 years, the artifacts from the tomb of King Tut return to San Francisco. The exhibit presents more than 130 important objects, including 50 from the tomb of King Tut. The exhibition places King Tut in a larger context through an additional 80 objects from the tombs of his ancestors, which provide insight into the daily life and royal burial practices of the 18th Dynasty.
Cartier and America at the Legion of Honor
Marking Cartier's 100 years in the United States, this exhibition covers the history of the house of Cartier from its first great successes as the "king of jewelers and jeweler to kings" during the Belle Époque through the 1960s and the 1970s, when Cartier supplied celebrities of the day with their jewels and Tank Watches. With an extensive variety of jewelry forms - Cartier made its mark with the ingenuity of its designs and its exquisite cratsmanship. The spectacular array of objects includes jewelry of the Gilded Age and Art Deco periods, and concentrates on pieces worn by Americans, including jewelry worn by Gloria Swanson in the movie Sunset Boulevard, Daisy Fellowes' famous Tutti Frutti necklace, a panther brooch made for the Duchess of Windsor, and the personal jewelry of Princess Grace of Monaco from the time of her wedding in 1956.
Dinner at the Hyatt Hotel on Union Square will follow.
The cost is $130 for museum members and $145 for nonmembers. The price includes dinner, all admissions, tip, transportation, etc.
