Christmas Parol Family Event:
A Filipino Tradition

Saturday, November 20, 2004, 1:30 - 4:00 p.m.
2-for-1 museum admission for participants; Advance reservations required

Joyce BridgesThe Haggin Museum is proud to offer a family event that will be part of a Stockton-wide celebration of a 100-year-old Filipino Christmas tradition known as parols. All through the holiday season, these star-shaped lanterns, representing the Star of Bethlehem, can be found hanging outside homes and along the streets of cities and small towns throughout the Philippines. Parols are traditionally made from simple materials like bamboo sticks, crepe paper, and a candle, although the present-day parol can take many forms.

At this event, families will create their own unique parols using colored cellophane, trim, doilies, garland, and papel de japón (Japanese paper) to cover a star-shaped frame of bamboo. Local members of the Association of Filipino American Educators Dance Troupe will assist visitors in making these stars and then lead a procession with the completed parols to the Haggin Room. After performing the traditional Christmas dance Sakuting, dancers will lead visitors in a simple dance with their parols.

Participants in this Haggin program are invited to join a parol parade and party in downtown Stockton in December. Parols may also be donated for auction to benefit Stockton’s Little Manila Foundation and the Filipino American Historical Society’s museum fund.

There are a limited number of spaces available, so contact Curator of Education Marilyn Guida at (209) 940-6315 or mguida@hagginmuseum.org today to reserve your space at this program.
