Fashion Excavated:
Curated by San Joaquin Delta College

April 26 - June 7, 2009

Select pieces of the museum’s costume collection were put on display in 2008 after Delta College Fashion Program Director Leslie Asfour and Instructor Jonathan Singer first saw what was in the museum’s collection, leading to 2009’s special exhibition. Photo by Laureen Huey.
For the first time in the museum’s history, the hidden treasures of its historical costume collection will be revealed. Rich with clothing and accessories, the special exhibition Fashion Excavated represents the Victorian, Edwardian and modern woman at the height of fashion.

The Fashion Program at Delta College is partnering with the museum to curate its historic costume collection and produce this exhibition of some of the key pieces. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the Victorian period in fashion, but the early 20th century is represented by a few select fashion pieces and accessories.

Leslie Asfour, Delta’s Fashion Program Director and Jonathan Singer, an instructor in the Fashion Design Program, have been working on the collection, sorting through hundreds of garments and accessories, to determine their ages and the settings in which they were worn. They have selected 50 representative outfits, along with a bevy of opulent accessories to exhibit which provide a comprehensive capsule of the extensive collection.

Special pieces from notable and famous designers, such as Paul Poiret and Charles Frederick Worth will be spotlighted in the exhibition, alongside custom designs created for the most fashionable women of their time. Rich textiles, embellishments and finery showcase the evocative and decadent life and style of the women who wore them, giving an insight to the importance of fashion and its role in the lives of socialites.

Starting with late Victorian pieces, the exhibition will include fashion from 1910-1920, and provide a window into the ever-changing trends of the 1920s, the very fashionable 1930s and into the stylish 1940s.
