For 76 years the museum has honored the vision of founding patron Robert T. McKee by hosting this exhibition which features the work of student artists in kindergarten through grade 12. McKee, who grew up on Oak Street in Stockton and traveled by steamboat twice a week to attend art school in San Francisco, understood the desire to pursue art. He hoped that an annual display of art work would encourage students by providing a public venue for their efforts.

The museum is honored to foster this commitment to learning and community. Student work is a reflection of teacher work. Over the years the exhibit has grown in quality and diversity due to the dedication of teachers in area schools. This year will prove no exception and the museum is pleased to validate the sense of importance that young artists feel seeing their work on public display.

PACIFIC PROFESSOR SELECTED AS EXHIBITION JUDGE
University of the Pacific Professor of Painting and Printmaking Barbara Flaherty will serve as the judge for this year’s McKee exhibition. During her 20 years in the Department of Visual Arts, she has created work that taps into the enduring richness of the ancient landscapes of Western culture.

Flaherty received her Masters Degree in painting from UC Davis, where she studied with renowned painter Wayne Thiebaud. She has shown her work in numerous exhibitions in the area and abroad, as well as at The Haggin Museum in 1993 and 1998. A career retrospective titled Ancient Gardens and Sacred Groves premiered at the University of the Pacific Reynolds Gallery in November 2006.

Her paintings and drawings create magical, swirling worlds of color in which time folds in upon itself. Viewers of her work cannot help but feel like they have visited these places before. This is clearly due to her wish to “create a visually poetic evocation of a place in the way that sound or smell can evoke a rich and complex memory.”

The Haggin Museum is proud to work with this outstanding artist and educator who brings her wealth of insight to the young artists of San Joaquin County as this year’s exhibition judge.

Celebrate with students, their families and teachers at the opening afternoon of the 76th McKee Student Art Exhibition. Last year our attendance record was smashed as more than 1,000 guests visited the galleries to admire the work of young artists working in pencil, pastel, collage, paint and three-dimensional media.

This year’s reception on Saturday, Jan. 20, will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. and admission will be free to all visitors. The event is sponsored by the museum’s Junior Women’s Group, who will provide punch and cookies for the guests.

Visitors will also enjoy the sounds of young San Joaquin County jazz musicians Central Connection.

CALLING ALL TEACHERS
It is thanks to the teachers in San Joaquin County’s schools that the museum has been able to display student art work for 75 years. They have played a key role in selecting works for this show. Currently, each teacher can choose up to five works per class to submit for the McKee Exhibition. 

The museum is calling on teachers to help make this a banner year for the 75th McKee Student Art Exhibition by contributing student art work from their classes for display in this year’s McKee show. 

The upcoming dates for teachers to bring art work to the door on the south side of the museum are:

• Thursday-Friday, January 11-12, 2:30-5:30 p.m.;
• Saturday, January 13, 1:30-4:30 p.m.

MUSEUM INFORMATION
The Haggin Museum is located in Stockton's Victory Park, 1201 N. Pershing Ave., and is open Wednesday-Sunday, 1:30-5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults 18 and up; $2.50 for youth ages 10-17, students with a valid I.D., and seniors 65 and over; and free for museum members and children under 10 accompanied by an adult. Admission is free to all visitors on the first Saturday of every month.
