56th Stockton Art League Juried Exhibition

Stockton Art League 56th Juried Exhibition PosterSeptember 2 – October 31, 2010

The Stockton Art League's Juried Exhibition & Sale returns to The Haggin Museum for its 56th year, where a diverse and eclectic mix of 105 art works from long-standing local artists and newcomers from around the country is now on display and for sale through October 31, 2010.

Originally conceived in 1951 to recognize and reward excellence in Northern California art, the competition was expanded in recent years to include artists from across the country. More than 250 artists submitted entries this year in the following categories:

  • Acrylics and Oils
  • Water Media
  • Mixed Media & Graphics
  • Sculpture
  • Pastel

This year’s juror, Margot Schulzke, selected from a record-setting pool of 670 entries.

Margot Schulzke"Individually, I try to understand the artist’s intent and to evaluate the work in the context of its genre. Yet the demands of composition rank high, regardless of the genre," Schulzke explained. "Overall, I hope to see a broad variety of expression, from representational to abstraction. This show has that variety."

Schulzke, a nationally known artist who works in pastels and oil, was the main founder of the Pastel Society of the West Coast and is widely recognized as an authority on the subjects of design and composition. She is known for her architectural subjects inspired by her travels in Europe, Israel, Mexico and Central America, and waterscapes of the Sierras and the Pacific coast.

Schulzke has won honors and signature membership from many national art societies, including the Pastel Society of America, Degas Pastel Society, Pastel Society of the West Coast, California Art Club and American Artists Professional League.

The 105 works will be on display in the museum’s Lower and Upper West Galleries. These works will be for sale through the Stockton Art League and a brochure with pricing information will be available in the galleries and at the front desk.
