Plein-air painting is a language, the spirit of which is best understood through direct observation. By maintaining the key principals of art you can speak the language correctly.
John Budicin John Budicin San Bernardino CA
Paint what you see, but most importantly, paint what you feel.
John Cosby John Cosby Laguna Beach CA
The area in and around Stockton offers a range of subject matter that would excite any artist. I have painted in the area many times and each time I come back I find a whole new subject that turns my head.
Gil Dellinger Gil Dellinger Stockton CA
Stockton is such a fertile subject, because of the great diversity of subject matter; the farm lands, neighborhoods, wetlands, and port, and industry. There is such a diverse population, and interesting communities, that the whole is fascinating. All the artists I asked to come jumped at the chance.
Lucinda Kasser Lucinda Kasser Stockton CA
Stockton, the Delta and the Central Valley are rich in history, subject matter and beauty. While I have lived in this region for over twenty years, I continue to discover and draw new inspiration from this complex and changing landscape.
Peggi Kroll-Roberts Peggi Kroll-Roberts Angels Camp CA
I love to paint so many subjects, however the figure is my true passion and even then there is a real joy for me painting color directly from life. Color alone can be a subject for me. Thank you to my mom and dad for encouraging me to pursue this calling.
Clark Mitchell Clark Mitchell Angels Camp CA
For me, the most exciting as well as challenging method of capturing landscapes on canvas or paper is painting on location. A strong, successful pastel can make all the struggles worthwhile.
Joseph Paquet Joseph Paquet St. Paul MN
To capture the essence of place with the spirit of our time
Ray Roberts Ray Roberts Angels Camp CA
I try to make things look real, but in my own way. I strive for the totality of a picture. For me, there are certain criteria that every painting needs to meet. It's difficult to describe in words. Perhaps it's giving it my artistic side. I try to make it to that level of communication.
George Strickland George Strickland Oro Valley AZ
Painters look very intently and long at the world in order to draw shapes or match colors. In doing so, we become sensitized to nuance. This enables us to find beauty in even the most mundane things.
Charles Waldman Charles Waldman Sonora CA
I paint on location to discover beauty in the commonplace and to find new ways for me to express this with paint. When I can fully engage in this dialog between place and paint, it is, for me, utterly satisfying.
Mary Whyte Mary Whyte Johns Island SC
A person never decides to become an artist. Rather, at some point, one discovers that he or she was already an artist all along. It is in the same manner that artists never choose their subject matter. Instead, our paintings find us.

The San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta is the heart of California, Stockton is at the heart of the Delta, and The Haggin Museum is, for me, the heart of Stockton. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to paint and exhibit here once more with this remarkable group of artists.
